Just before Christmas we said ‘good bye’ to a dear aunt who was 104 years old. The words from MCC’s vision statement about sharing “God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ” came alive in her life. She modeled generosity of spirit by weekly sharing a loaf of bread with a neighbour, and most recently sewing thousands of quilt tops for MCC blankets.
Generosity is also evidenced in gifting a family member with a female goat purchased for a family in Kenya, or
providing funds so that a Peace Club in Zambia can train students to negotiate through a conflict with fellow students, teachers and parents, or donating to a natural disaster response. They all help to create the kind of global community in which we want to live.
As one generation passes on the mantle of generosity to the next, we are humbled by the response of MCC constituents. Financial support allows refugees created by the East Africa drought to receive food coupons as they walk into refugee camps. These coupons are redeemable for food grown locally and sold in marketplaces.
People acquainted with need have modeled the way. “Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behaviour: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them.” (Matthew 7:12a, The Message)
